A grandson of a friend sent me a link to a post on r/Arkansas where somebody was asking if Fairfield Bay is a "sundown town" and whether folks should be careful around Greers Ferry Lake. I read through the replies... and a lot of it was people who have clearly never set foot here, stating things like they're fact. No names, no examples, just "I heard" and "everybody knows."
I'm not going to pretend I can speak for every year of this town's history. But I can tell you what I see day to day. I'm at the post office, the Bay Rd. stores, the marina, church, and I go to way too many yard sales on Saturdays... and it's a mix of people. Retirees from all over, lake folks from Little Rock and Memphis and Texas, families in for the weekend, folks who bought a place sight unseen and are finding out where the good tomatoes grow. Nobody's checking papers at the gate.
Still, I don't think "that's not true" is enough of an answer. If somebody's worried enough to ask, we should say plainly that everybody is welcome here, and show it.
So what would you say to somebody asking? And what could we do to make a new visitor or neighbor feel it from the first day... a welcome packet with the realtors, maybe? Curious what you all think.
